Way Huge Smalls Green Rhino MKV Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal
Way Huge Smalls Green Rhino Overdrive Guitar Effects PedalĀ Ā
The Greenfather
In the world of overdrive pedals, nothing is quite as lauded as the Ibanez Tube Screamer. That little green box is one of the most widely used and highly regarded pedals ever to be conceived. Naturally, it is also one of the most widely imitated pedal designs in existence too. The Green Rhino Mk.V Smalls is Way Hugeās tasteful, yet distinct homage to this titan of the pedal industry.
The Exact Hue of the Beast
The Green Rhino Mk.V is a fantastic overdrive pedal that can slot in to any pedal board. The pedal provides gain which is saturated in beautiful clarity and glorious mid-range goodness. Whether the pedal is pushing and focussing an overdriven amp or simply lightly laid over a clean guitar tone, it will add precision and character. The tone control has a lot of sway on this pedal as well. It has been designed to be far reaching and dynamic allowing the pedal to sit exactly where you would like, tonally speaking. Where Way Huge have taken a stride away from the crowd is in the pedals simple to use, yet deeply effective flexibility controls.
A Rhino that does Yoga
One of the most killer aspects of this pedal comes from its āfreqā and ācurveā controls. The main controls alone are enough to inject a powerful and pretty punch into your rig. Way Huge went above and beyond with the two aforementioned smaller controls either side of the tone control.
Firstly, the āfreqā or frequency control. This control allows you to influence the specific fundamental characteristics of the pedal. The iconic āmid-humpā drive usually achieves its beautiful make-up by providing a hump in the mid-range frequencies around the 500Hz range. With the frequency control, you are able to manipulate the amount of push this frequency receives. With the knob at 12 oāclock it has the standard amount of boost but you can turn it either counterclockwise or clockwise to provide a cut or a boost. To make it even more powerful, thereās an internal control inside to choose between controlling the 500Hz point in the frequency range or the 100Hz point. This allows control over the signature āmid-humpā or the lower mids providing a boost or cut to the bassier section of your tone. Again, the focus is on control and flexibility. You can use the controls for flavour or for taming/boosting a specific guitar or amp.
The ācurveā control is a little more simplistic but just as useful. This control targets the high-end of the frequency spectrum. You can use it to curtail the harshness that can sometimes arise with certain amp/guitar/pedal combinations. This allows a final and specific defence against harshness.
Smaller Footprint, Same Rhino
This Green Rhino is part of Way Hugeās Smalls family. The Smalls line is a new line of pedals which takes some of the companiesā existing designs and places them within a much smaller footprint. This decrease in size makes them much more accommodating to a wider array of pedal boards whilst, crucially, perfectly preserving the same lauded tone and character. So, although this Rhino may be notably smaller, it still carries the same weight.
